Keratosis Pilaris

Keratos Pilaris/Follicular keratosis

Keratosis Pilaris looks like a scary word but calm your nerves down because its not as bad as it looks. It is merely a skin condition where small dry rash-like pimples appear around the body but one that is usually painless and harmless in most cases. They look like goosebumps but they don’t just disappear when the cold goes away.

The majority of people with this condition are children and young people who inherit it from their parents.Meaning if you suffer from this condition, its probably genetically transmitted from your parents and your children will most likely suffer from it.

This condition manifests itself as the body tries to create an avenue for more hair follicles to pop up but excessive keratin build up causes the bumps to appear instead. Keratin is a substance found in nails, skin and hair. The bumps appear around the arms, thighs and the buttocks but may also appear in other places.

Nobody knows as yet why this happens but it is not infectious and disappears on its own with time.If you suffer from the condition, ensure you moisturize your skin as much as possible and avoid scented soaps while taking showers. Also, take lukewarm or cool showers and gently scrub the skin with a washcloth or exfoliating mitt to help reduce the rashes.

The important thing to keep in mind is that the ‘chicken skin’ will eventually disappear on its own even without treatment.Do not panic or feel obligated to seek medical treatment but if it persists or makes you uncomfortable, consult your local physician.
