The success of any democracy is built on the backs of the men and women who stand in the gap on election day. On February 26, 2026, thousands of Kenyans in Mbeere North (Muminji and Evurore Wards), Isiolo South, and West Kabras woke up before dawn to serve their country.

These individuals—our Clerks, Presiding Officers (POs), and Deputy Presiding Officers (DPOs)—ensured that the by-elections were conducted smoothly, transparently, and with integrity. However, nearly a month later, many of these dedicated workers are still waiting for their hard-earned compensation.
The Backbone of Our Elections
While the headlines often focus on the winners and the political shifts, the logistical reality is handled by the temporary staff. Their roles are demanding:
- Clerks: Managing queues and verifying voter details for hours on end.
- POs and DPOs: Ensuring every ballot is accounted for and results are transmitted accurately under high-pressure conditions.
Many of these staff members are youth, teachers, and local professionals who took time away from their daily hustles to ensure the democratic process didn’t stall. For many, this isn’t just “pocket money”; it’s rent, school fees, and daily bread.
The Impact of Payment Delays
Delayed payments don’t just affect the individuals; they affect the trust between the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and the citizens it relies on.
- Financial Strain: In the current economic climate, a month’s delay is significant.
- Future Recruitment: If the Commission gains a reputation for late payments, it may struggle to attract high-quality, honest personnel for the 2027 General Election.
- Morale: Professionalism should be a two-way street. These officials delivered on their promise; it is only fair the Commission delivers on its.
Our Polite Appeal to the IEBC
We understand that the Commission often faces budgetary hurdles and exchequer delays. However, we urge the IEBC Finance Committee and the Secretariat to prioritize the settlement of these dues.
We specifically call for:
- Transparency: A clear timeline for when the staff in Mbeere North and other by-election areas should expect their funds.
- Efficiency: Streamlining the verification process to ensure bank transfers are initiated without further delay.
To the IEBC, we say: You have often told us “Your Vote, Your Future.” Let us also remember that those who protect that vote deserve their future secured through timely pay.
How You Can Help
If you worked during the Feb 26th by-elections or know someone who did, share this article. Let’s keep the conversation polite but firm. Our poll officials are heroes of our democracy—let’s treat them as such.
