The heart of Ishiara town is currently grappling with a growing environmental and health crisis. An undesignated dumpsite, located at the old slaughterhouse right within the Central Business District (CBD), has become a major point of concern for residents, traders, and local leaders alike.

For months, the site has been a mounting pile of waste, with many locals terming it a severe health hazard. While some have pointed fingers at the County Government for the lapse in waste management, others have suffered in silence as the pollution continues to affect the air quality and hygiene of the market area.
A Leadership Intervention: Hon. J.M. Thiriku Visits Ishiara
In a move to address these concerns, the Speaker of the Embu County Assembly, Hon. Josiah Thiriku, visited the dumpsite yesterday to assess the situation firsthand. Accompanied by the team from “Iko Plan,” the Chief Officer in charge of Youth Empowerment, and the Evurori Ward Administrator, the Speaker toured the site to identify sustainable solutions.
Speaking on the situation via his official Facebook platform, Hon. Thiriku acknowledged the severity of the “menace” but also highlighted an opportunity for transformation. He noted that rather than just being a pollution problem, the waste site presents a chance for youth engagement.

“Iko Plan has identified an opportunity to empower the youth from this menace,” Hon. Thiriku stated. He further expressed optimism about the local community’s involvement, noting that “Ishiara Youth are ready, Iko Plan is ready.”
Collaborative Solutions: Empowering Local Groups
The solution to Ishiara’s garbage problem lies in community-led initiatives and collaboration between the county government and organized groups. One such group at the forefront is the Ishiara Open Self Help Group.
Waste management is a core pillar of the Ishiara Open Self Help Group’s agenda. By partnering with such local organizations, the county can ensure that garbage collection is consistent, localized, and provides employment opportunities for the youth. Transitioning from “suffering the pollution” to active “youth empowerment” through waste-to-resource projects could turn this health hazard into an economic engine for Evurori Ward.
Looking Ahead
The visit by the County Speaker marks a critical first step toward cleaning up Ishiara Market. With the commitment from “Iko Plan” and the readiness of the local youth, residents can hope for a cleaner, healthier CBD in the near future.
