       RIP Wafula Chebukati

William Chebukati, former IEBC chairman

Wafula Chebukati, the former chairperson of Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), has been declared clinically dead. Reports indicate that most of his organs were not functioning, and his family was advised to decide whether to switch off the life-support machines.

Chebukati served as IEBC chair from January 2017 to January 2023, overseeing the 2017 and 2022 general elections. His tenure was marked by both praise and criticism, particularly concerning the conduct and outcomes of the elections.

In early 2024, Chebukati’s health began to deteriorate after undergoing head surgery in Germany. Upon returning to Kenya, his condition worsened, leading to his hospitalization in February 2025.

His passing has elicited mixed reactions from Kenyans, reflecting the complex legacy of his leadership at the IEBC.
