**Tensions Erupt in Siakago: Clashes Between Meru and Mbeere Communities Turn Deadly**

*Siakago, Embu County *

What began as a simmering suspicion over stolen motorbikes has escalated into deadly ethnic clashes in Siakago market, leading to the deaths of six people, the destruction of property worth millions, and the mass evacuation of the Meru community from the area.

The violence broke out three days ago following the alleged theft of five *bodabodas* belonging to members of the Mbeere community. Tensions soared when locals accused individuals from the Meru community of orchestrating the thefts. Although three of the stolen motorcycles were later recovered in Maua, Ishiara, and Gachoka towns, the damage had already been done.

As mistrust deepened, violent confrontations erupted, culminating in the deaths of three members from each community. In a chilling reminder of the region’s history with traditional weapons, all six victims were reportedly killed by bow and arrow — a method of conflict long thought to be fading.

In response to the escalating tensions, Cabinet Secretary Ruku made an urgent trip to Siakago on Monday in an attempt to mediate and calm rising tempers. Despite his appeals, his efforts fell flat, with locals remaining defiant. A second attempt yesterday only worsened the situation, sparking more protests and deepening the rift between the communities.

The Meru community has since largely evacuated Siakago, fearing retaliatory attacks. The once-bustling market now bears the scars of the unrest: rows of charred stalls and shops, most of them owned by Meru traders, now stand in ruins. A few Mbeere-owned businesses were also torched in the chaos, underscoring the retaliatory nature of the violence.

Preliminary assessments estimate the total economic losses in the millions of shillings, with livelihoods shattered overnight.

Local leaders and peace groups are now calling for urgent intervention, fearing that the conflict could spread beyond Siakago if not swiftly contained. Security has been reinforced in the area, but residents remain on edge, with many families displaced and commerce at a near-standstill.

The government is yet to issue a comprehensive response plan, and as investigations into the original bodaboda thefts continue, the bigger challenge remains: restoring trust between the Meru and Mbeere communities and preventing another wave of bloodshed.

**This is a developing story.**
